THE ROAD SAFETY PLEDGE

A commitment to promote and support the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020

I am made increasingly aware by almost daily news reports of road crashes that road traffic injuries and fatalities cost developing countries including the Philippines up to $100 billion each year with devastating consequences for individuals, families, communities and society, not to mention human and economic development.

I am deeply concerned over data indicating that every year, more than one million people are killed on the roads of developing countries and tens of millions are injured, a toll set to double by 2020 with road crashes as the leading cause of disability and premature death for the most economically productive age group between 15 and 44 years of age.

I realize that the Philippine has some of the most dangerous roads and driving conditions in the world and that the government and private sector together must make a unified effort to halt and begin to reverse the trend towards a rapid increase in the number of road traffic deaths and injuries.

As a safety-conscious and responsible motorist, car owner and citizen of the Philippines, I volunteer to promote and support the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 which is being launched simultaneously worldwide on May 11, 2011 by high level government officials, road safety activists and Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) member clubs in over 100 countries on three continents and in the Philippines by the FIA affiliated Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) as lead partner of the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership (PGRSP).

To pro-actively participate in the Decade of Action’s campaign to save five million lives by 2020, I pledge to:

WEAR and display the “Decade of Action for Road Safety Tag” as a sign of my commitment to fight against the suffering, grief and injustice caused by road deaths and injuries, as a unifying, motivating and instantly recognizable symbol for this global effort during the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety;

BELIEVE that together with the people of other countries participating in the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety I can help save millions of lives over the next 10 years, 2011 to 2020;
